CREECH MEN

Every now and then we organise an activity solely for the men of Creech and their friends. It’s a non-threatening environment to get to know each other and have some fun at the same time.

Activities have in the past included bowling, skittles, golfing, laser-quest, climbing, caving and a trip to the Haynes Motor Museum (see picture on left). We’ve also been on a tour of a new Royal Navy Assault Ship in Plymouth, had breakfast with and heard from Derek Cleave, chaplain to Bristol City Football Club and former policeman but wrongly convicted murderer, Noel Fellowes.

Creech Men hear that Science & Faith can mix!

After a hearty cooked breakfast early on Saturday morning (18th April), 30 men at Creech St Michael Baptist Church heard Rev. Professor Barry Jennings speak about the relationship between science and faith. Among his many qualifications, Professor Jennings is a retired research professor of Physics & Chemistry, as well as being ordained in the Anglican Church, so just the right person to answer the question of whether science and faith are compatible or not. As the men listened on intently, Professor Jennings talked about some of the most significant scientific discoveries in the past centuries and then linked them to what the Bible teaches. A number of questions were asked by the men after the talk and some extremely positive comments were received. Organiser of this Creech Men event and Assistant Minister of Creech St Michael Baptist Church, Gary Birch said ‘the whole morning was very well received by all and Professor Jennings certainly knew his onions! It was good to hear that people of faith needn’t be afraid of science – after all science and nature is all part of God’s creation anyway, as we heard at the breakfast. I guess you could say the whole morning went with a big bang!

CREECH MEN Went… COMMANDO!

40 Commando

On Wednesday 28th January, Creech Men visited Norton Manor Camp, the home of Royal Marines 40 Commando. After being escorted through security and to the other side of camp, we were then led into the dark and muddy woods. Late evening, so extremely dark, torches and flares lit up the surroundings, enabling us to see the conditions that the Marines so often train in.

Led by Sgt Jim McCurry, a team of Marines showed us the workings of trip flares, weaponry, food rations, camping and personal equipment and night vision equipment.

Every man who came thoroughly enjoyed the trip, but we can also now appreciate some of what our soldiers go through in training and in service to their country. Whether you agree with war or not, the reality is that young British men and women are on the front lines and some are even giving their lives, and we want to support them in our prayers and understanding. We also took a collection for the Royal Marine Benevolent Fund.

On Friday 18th April, Creech Men visited Taunton Fire Station. The evening began with a Road Traffic Accident training exercise, when one of our group, David Cull, was asked to be an injured driver who needed to be cut out of a vehicle. Firefighter Barry Tucker talked us through what was happening as the glass was all shattered, the medics stabilised the patient, doors were removed before the roof finally cut off.

After this demonstration, we were shown round the station's main appliances by Crew Manager Ainsley Bird, and shown all that they carry, from a 100ft ladder, full chemical protective suits, all manner of tools right through to a simple teddy bear that is used to calm down anxious children!

Breakfast with Tough Talk

Saturday 10th November 2007

30 men gathered at CSMBC to enjoy a hearty breakfast of the 'fat bloke' type, after which Ian, who had driven from Essex on the morning, shared some of his life story. From growing up in a single parent home in the heart of the east end of London to working on the doors of clubs and pubs, Ian fought his way through life the hard way. He lifted weights for his country but also took steroids to enhance his abilities, even injecting himself with steroids meant for horses. Life on the doors meant carrying weapons at all times, regularly using them to stay alive yourself. With a contract on his life and with friends being killed all around him, Ian eventually found his peace with God through Jesus Christ, when after a friend of his had attended a church and been physically healed from some serious injuries, Ian took stock of his wretched life and asked God to come and help him sort it out.

Listen to what Ian had to say on downloadable mp3
